History

Flax Seeds have been a part of the human diet for over 5000 years. To the Cherokee Indians the Flax Seed was as sacred as the eagle feather. They believed this small brown seed captured energies from the sun that were vital to the body's life processes.

Essential Fatty Acids

EFA's function as building blocks in membranes of every cell in the body. They also produce "protoglandin families", hormone like substances necessary for energy metabolism and cardiovascular and immune health. About 20 specific fatty acids are used by the human body to maintain normal function. All but two can be synthesized by our bodies. These 2 vital essential fatty acids Omega-3 EFA and Omega-6 EFA must be obtained in proper balance from foods or supplements.

Is Omega-3 lacking in the Average Western Diet

Yes Yes and Yes! According to all nutritional studies its estimated that the average diet supplies just 20% of the required amount! Though Omega-3's are of such importance to health - they have gradually begun to disappear from our diets for more than one hundred years by food oil refining, cereal milling etc and now it has almost gone. Less than 1/5th of the amount needed remains - truly the "Nutritional Missing Link".

And whilst our huge intake of modern oils in the form of polyunsaturates help to lower cholesterol - there is another side to the coin. The polyunsaturates that we eat contain a much higher proportion of omega-6's than omega-3's EFA's. Such a high intake of omega-6 is linked with a higher risk of cancer and increased deposits of oxidised cholesterol on arterial walls which can cause arthero-sclerosis and strokes.

This is because these polyunstaurates are prone to oxidation caused by heat, light and exposure to oxygen. In addition excessive omega-6 oils tend to block the good work of omega-3 oils.

The Omega-3 imbalance

Prior to 150 years ago for thousands of years the human diet was made up of a natural selection of foods which provided an equal 1:1 balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3. The human brain has this 1:1 ratio that distinguishes it from the brains of other species. Todays diet is much higher in Omega-6 and the ratio shifted to a staggering 20-25 omega6:1omega3! Such a chronic imbalance can result in poor and deteriorating health.

But thats not all! Most processed foods have the valuable EFA's removed to preserve them. And modern seed selection has reduced omega-3 content of many grains and todays factory farmed animals contain far less omega-3 than their free range ancestors did. Air and chemical pollution easily depletes omega-3 levels in the body as does caffeine, smoking, alcohol, medication and even stress. With all these factors at play - its no wonder todays diet contains such low levels of omega-3's with the deficiencies manifesting in cell deterioration, ill health and degenerative diseases.

The critical omega-3/6 ratio

Eating the right kinds of EFA's not only makes you feel so much healthier but will also help you to lose weight. We certainly do need some omega-6 oils in our diet but to restore the imbalance we need to increase omega-3's and decrease omega-6's whilst not increasing the overall level of polyunsaturates.

Restoring the balance

The balance is best restored by putting Flax Seed Oil back in our diets. A regular supplement of Omega Nutrition Flax Seed Oil will restore the imbalance even after years of omega-3 deficiency.

In fact, a study in the British Journal of Nutrition found that subjects consuming flax for just four weeks not only increased their levels of Omega-3 EFA's but also reduced cholesterol by 9.0% and blood glucose by 27.0%!

The potent punch of Flax Seed Oil

Flax Seed Oil contains mainly Omega-3 (60.0%) and some Omega-6 (20.0%) and Omega-9 fatty acids (20.0%). It is one of the richest natural sources of the Omega-3 essential fatty acid called alpha linoleic acid ALA. In addition contains high levels of Beta Carotene and Vitamin E and virtually cholesterol free!

Just compare that with salmon with 30% Omega 3 to 20% Omega 6, sunflower oil just 1%1 Omega 3 to 70% Omega 6 and olive oil just 1% Omega 3 to 15% Omega 6.

The Fish-Free Alternative

Ideal for vegetarians and certified BCK Kosher, Omega Nutrition Flax Seed Oils are much richer in Omega-3 EFA as well as the simpler alpha linoleic acid (ALA) than fish oils which are also higher in cholesterol and increasingly are showing detectable pesticide contamination and tend to leave a fishy aftertaste, fishy breath and in some cases heartburn.
